Mazomanie Sand/Oak Barrens

       Description: Mazomanie Oak Barrens (no. 248) State Natural Area was an alright place to be. It was 160 acres of nothing like any other nature park I have even been. The Barrens is located within the lower Wisconsin State River way from the intersection of U.S. Highway 12 and State Highway 78 just east of Sauk City on County Highway Y, in Dane County.

Plant Observations: Reed Canary grass covered most of the area, with June grass here and there.  The picture below does not give any justice to how beautiful this was. The pine trees would sound like the ocean when the wind went by.

I was surprised that in like the first time in my whole life to see prickly pear cactus, well cactus in general. Weirdly the three times I was there, I didn’t see…
